Alsace is an area of art, culture and gastronomy. The regional identity of Alsace is very characteristic. It represents the complex history of a region which over the centuries, alternately was French and German. The earthware, tableware and various furniture are a testimony of the the skills of the Alsatian people and their folk art.
Despite the elongated shape of the region, Alsace has a great variety of landscapes and significant climatic differences. This diversity is reflected in the variety of local dishes, all very highly recommended! After a long walk you can enjoy a traditional Baeckeoffe meal (a vegetable and meat stew) or a traditional Alsatian sauerkraut with meat in on of the many restaurants. You will find them not only in the towns, but also as a part of many farmhouses.
The southern part is well known as the Colmar Wine Region. You will find great wines there of which those of Kaefferkopf (mountain) are especially famous.
